A six-meter long butanding (whale shark) trapped in Malabor, Tibiao, Antique, was released back to the sea by concerned fishermen on May 5.
“As the fishermen drew the nets open, they were whispering to the giant creature, ‘Bring more fish! Bring more fish! for luck,” reports Emmanuel Lorena, as posted on Butanding Network. According to the fishermen, says Lerona, whale sharks are fairly regular visitors in the coast of Bgy Malabor.
Whale sharks are known to be very friendly and playful creatures, sometimes allowing swimmers to catch a ride. They are more commonly sighted in Donsol, Sorsogon, a sleepy fishing town that has been called “Whale Shark Capital of the World).
Bgy Malabor is one of 21 barangays in the municipality of Tibiao in Antique province, and is two hours away from Boracay. More than just a Boracay sidetrip, however, Tibiao offers a seven-tiered waterfall called Bugtong Bato, Tibiao River, a rainforest in Bgy Tigbaboy and a white san beach in Seco Point, acccording to Lakwatsero.com.
Reach Tibiao via Caticlan, Kalibo or Iloilo. From Caticlan, take a 30-minute jeepney ride to Nabas Crossing followed by a 2.5-hour ride to Tibiao From iloilo, take a two-hour bus ride to Libertad via Tibiao. Information from Lakwatsero.com
