A small step for Geraldine Roman, a giant leap for the LGTB community.

The first Filipino transgender lawmaker Bataan Rep. Geraldine Roman has her eyes set on joining the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) reserve corps, Inquirer reports.

She commended the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) for allowing military applicants from the lesbian, gay, bisexuals, transsexual (LGBT) sector.

“This will complement their appreciation for the LGBT community for they will see that we can exemplify the same sense of discipline, the same military professionalism, and the same love of country that the current men and women in uniform embody,” Roman said.

But there is one small problem.

While Roman intends to sport a female officer’s uniform and haircut, the military’s public affairs office chief, Colonel Edgard Arevalo, said that they follow gender of the applicants based on their Certificates of Live Birth.

Arevalo noted that this is the first time for them to deal with this situation. He emphasized, however, that Roman and other members of the LGBT community are welcome to join the military.
