When it comes to kids in malls (or anywhere else), it’s better to be overprotective.
“A three-year-old boy named Ivan died on Wednesday, Feb 26, after figuring in an escalator accident at the 999 Mall in Binondo, Manila last Monday, Feb 24,” reports ABS-CBN News correspondent Kiko Faulve.
A woman identified only as Jennilyn said that she was with Ivan and his mother when they were at the mall’s second floor.
The report noted: “Jennilyn said the boy let go of her mother’s hand and played near the escalator. She said Ivan’s mother glanced at him before going back to looking at the shoes.”
However, Jennilyn and Ivan’s mother were shocked when a few minutes later they heard a loud noise. People were yelling that a child had fallen. It turned out that it was Ivan who had fallen from the escalator.
Investigators say that since Ivan was playing at the edge of the escalator, the motion of the floor most likely dragged him down.
Ivan, who sustained severe head injuries, fell into a coma and passed away in the hospital at 7 am on Wednesday.
According to the report, “the mall’s owners have provided financial assistance to the family although Ivan’s mother admitted that she also shares the blame for what happened.”
