In Biñan City, Laguna — which is around 34 kilometers south of Manila — a band of petty thieves have earned people’s ire.
Police had noted that these thieves usually targeted convenience stores and they allegedly usually took imported chocolates — specifically Toblerone bars. Thus, they became known as the “Toblerone Gang.”
In any case, Biñan policemen finally nabbed two members of the Toblerone Gang last week. “Reporters were shocked, though, when one cop slapped a suspect,” reports GMA News Online.
It was revealed that the cop was actually the suspect’s father. He was quoted as telling his son, “Hindi mo na ako binigyan ng kahihiyan. Bakit ganyan ka?”
(“You’ve brought me great shame. Why are you like that?”)
The cop then told GMA News, “Hindi namin kinukunsinte yan. Alam naman din ng mga kapatid niya na ganon. Yun nga makulong muna siya, para matuto sa ginagawa niyang hindi maganda.”
(“We don’t encourage what he did. His siblings also know what he’s been doing. He should spend time in jail so he’ll learn that he did something wrong.”)
The report said that one more Toblerone Gang suspect was arrested in a separate operation. Police explained that, as far as they know, only one more Toblerone Gang member is still in hiding.
