Tinubdan Falls tragedy caught on video; 2 dead, 1 missing

Here’s a reminder to take extra precautions before deciding to go on an outdoor trip in the middle of the rainy season.

Two people were found dead while one is missing after a rushing waterfall swept them away in Catmon, Cebu on Sunday, September 26.

Authorities identified the fatalities as Jude Monterola, 17 years old, and 7-year-old Princess Alastra. Alastra’s mother, Jacel, remains missing.

A video posted by Carlos Japitana Dolendo on Facebook showed the dramatic attempt to rescue Monterola, who was eventually swept by the rush of water. Dolendo wrote on Facebook, “We try to rescue him to saved his life but unfortunately he’s unlucky.. I’m so sorry..”

According to reports, the victims were part of 17 family members who went on an outing to the Tinubdan Falls, a popular local tourist spot.

According to Sunstar Cebu, the Cebu Police Provincial Office (CPPO) asked the local authorities at Catmon to close off the falls to tourists temporarily. The CPPO has also said they will deploy personnel at Tinubdan to keep people away for the meantime.
