Landmarks of huge animal statues are not new in Baguio City — there’s the gigantic Lion’s Head sculpture along Kennon Road that is widely popular among tourists as they make their way towards the city proper.
Yet it seems that travelers making their way to the City of Pines will have yet another animal bust to look forward to as the Baguio Information Office announced the inauguration of the Beagle Head Statue located along the mountainside of Naguilian Road — aka highway you’d have to pass through when making your way to or from the surfing capital of La Union.
Its inauguration photos were filled with products and brand paraphernalia of Top Breed, a local dog food brand
“Another tourist trap,” one Redditor said.
“Looks ugly AF, but a starving artist probably got paid so I’m conflicted,” another one remarked.
Meanwhile, another pointed out that the dog bust is likely not entirely new and could have been around as early as 2012.
“Originally it was just a quirky mural done by the land owners, private property so not really a tourist spot. This was around 2012-2013 and then it got sponsored by Top Breed around 2016(?). It looked like shit the past few years since it wasn’t maintained, possibly due to the lockdowns. Looks like Top Breed sponsored another repainting,” one Redditor said.
