A young woman’s relaxing picnic in Baguio City ended in tragedy after a pine tree branch suddenly fell and killed her on Sunday.
The unnamed 16-year-old was underneath trees in the picturesque Camp John Hay when the incident happened, The Philippine Daily Inquirer reported. She was with her classmates, who all had just graduated from junior high school, Sun Star wrote.
The victim sustained serious injuries on her abdomen and was taken to Baguio General Hospital but died later that day.
Allan Garcia, president of the John Hay Management Corporation (JHMC) said in a statement sent to Coconuts Manila today that they were “deeply saddened” by the accident.
Camp John Hay Development Corporation (CJHDEVCO) said it has extended financial assistance to the family by shouldering hospital and funeral expenses.
“With the safety of tourists, workers, employees and the general public in mind, JHMC and CJHDEVCO are taking all precautionary measures to prevent similar accidents from happening in Camp John Hay,” Garcia said in the statement.
The Camp John Hay management had asked permission from the government to cut dead trees in their vicinity. The pine tree that the branch came from was reportedly among these dead trees. It was cut down on Monday.
