Teacher from Iloilo who allegedly showed ‘porn’ to teen students resigns

An unidentified teacher from Ajuy, in Iloilo province, who showed a “pornographic” TV show for sex-ed purposes in science class resigned yesterday, a Department of Education (DepEd) official said.

Lilibeth Estoque, assistant superintendent of the DepED in Iloilo, said the teacher resigned “to have peace of mind” following the uproar over his decision to show an episode of the television series “A Girl’s Guide to 21st Century Sex” to his Grade 10 class in Pili National High School, ABS-CBN News reports. (And in a move likely to scar the teenagers even more than any televised nudity ever could, the DepEd also plans to put them through therapy to counter any possible negative effects of watching the show.)

“A Girl’s Guide to 21st Century Sex” was an educational television series created by Dr. Catherine Hood that teaches about topics such as delayed orgasm, sexual role-playing, premature ejaculation, how to have sex while pregnant, and masturbation. (We checked, and while the show does contain nudity, it’s pretty tame.)

Ajuy town Mayor Jett Rojas learned about the teacher’s decision to show the program in class, prompting him to speak with school officials, who said that the material was indeed included in the school’s curriculum, GMA News reports.

Rojas told Manila Bulletin that the Philippine National Police-Women and Children’s Protection Desk said that the video shown in class was suitable for couples but not for students. The mayor said that while he hasn’t seen the video himself, one of the town councilors told him that it was inappropriate for teenagers.

Prior to the teacher’s resignation, the DepEd had formed a team to investigate the incident, saying that they want to go through “due process.”

(Sure, because none of this was in any way a major overreaction to some 16-year-olds — all of whom, it should be noted, are aware of the internet — seeing a penis on TV. Nope, not an overreaction at all.)
