Authorities are now investigating a Far Eastern Air Transport plane from Taipei which last night overshot the runway of Kalibo International Airport, one of two airports used by those traveling to popular tourist destination Boracay.
Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) spokesperson Eric Apolonio told Coconuts Manila through a text message that the incident happened at 6:04pm. The 121 passengers and 7 crew members are all safe and unharmed.
The initial report revealed that the aircraft, a McDonnell Douglas MD-83, overextended its front landing gear to the grassy area while it was taxiing to the Kalibo airport terminal building.
Airport personnel and rescuers responded and towed the Taiwanese aircraft from the far end of the runway back to the airport’s parking bay.
The airport’s normal operations resumed at 7:34pm last night, Apolonio told Coconuts.
The CAAP’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Inquiry Board (AAIIB) officers are now probing the incident to determine if there were safety procedures violated.
