It’s no surprise that Pope Francis presence and words moved people to tears in Tacloban City, one of the areas hit the hardest by Typhoon Yolanda.

“Pope Francis brought a message of hope to the city of Tacloban on Saturday, January 17, bringing comfort to survivors of Typhoon Haiyan, the country’s worst natural disaster that killed thousands of people in 2013,” reports ABS-CBNnews.com.

The mass held at the grounds near the Tacloban airport started sometime past 9am. A makeshift altar had been set up at the site.

Pope Francis told the people, “We have a Lord who is capable of crying with us, capable of walking with us in the most difficult moments of life. Let us look to the Christ on the cross. He understands us because he endured everything.”

He also explained that he decided to come to the Philippines after seeing the devastation brought by Typhoon Yolanda in Nov 2013.

“When I saw from Rome the catastrophe, I felt that I had to be here. And on those very days, I decided to come here. I am here to be with you. A little bit late, but I’m here,” he said.
