The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS-DOST) caught a phreatomagmatic eruption at the Taal Volcano through cameras at its Main Crater Station.

The eruption happened from 3:16 to 3:21 in the afternoon of Thursday, July 1, 2021.

The scientific surveillance video shows the placid waters of the crater lake first appearing to bubble, before a mushroom-shaped explosion one kilometer high erupts from somewhere beneath the lake.

The scientific institute also raised the alert level for Taal to Level 3 (magmatic unrest) this afternoon, following the eruption. PHIVOLCS “strongly recommends” the evacuation of Taal Volcano Island and the barangays of Agoncillo and Laurel in Batangas.
