Valentine’s Day cards don’t usually come as witty — or as political — as these ones.
Facebook user Angelo Arnaldo shared a post today which shows an array of sweet V-Day cards that also throw shade at Philippine politicians, just in time for Hearts Day.
He greeted everyone a Happy Valentine’s Day and said in a mix of English and Filipino: “Since [it’s] Valentines today and election season as well. Here are some timely [V]alentines card[s] which I made last night, you can all use it.”
Arnaldo told Coconuts Manila through a Facebook message that he’s fond of making memes like these.
“I make these kinds of memes as a sort of de-stressor, an outlet for everyone’s frustrations,” he said.
“But lately my memes were mostly on Philippine politics since election is nearing and I get stressed out with the crap our politicians are doing,” he added.
The graphics may be basic but the copy is totally witty. Here’s a sampling of his work:
Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr.
On the former senator’s V-Day card, it says in Filipino: “I’ll steal even your heart.”
The Office of the Ombudsman filed cases against Revilla and fellow senators Juan Ponce Enrile and Jinggoy Estrada in 2014 for allegedly allocating hundreds of millions of pesos of their Priority Development Assistance Funds (PDAF) to fake non-government organizations (NGOs) owned by businessperson Janet Lim-Napoles.
Revilla was accused of pocketing PHP224 million (US$4,257,505.55) of the fund, but he says he’s innocent.
He was acquitted of plunder in December after being detained for over four years and is running for senator again in May’s mid-term elections.
Juan Ponce Enrile
The former senator turns 95 years old today so his V-Day card reads: “My love for you will stay immortal.”
This has been a long-running joke among Filipinos, who can’t believe how old the controversial politician is.
Enrile has even acknowledged his seemingly everlasting presence in politics and once said: “I am not saying I am immortal but only God knows.”
Rodrigo Duterte
Of course, President Rodrigo Duterte gets his own card as well.
His card reads: “Ang Pilipinas ay Maharlika, ako maharot halika.”
This translates into: “The Philippines is Maharlika (noble), I’m promiscuous, come here,” but it’s really only funny in Filipino.
This is in reference to Duterte saying on Monday that the Philippines should be renamed “The Republic of Maharlika,” an idea that came from the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos.
Imee Marcos
Imee’s card is a play on words that references Mike Posner’s song Please Don’t Go.
Her card reads: “Baby Princeton goooooo.”
Imee claims that she graduated from Princeton University but news site Rappler found that she never actually finished her program and was not awarded a degree.
The humorous V-Day cards have gotten a lot of love from Pinoys, garnering over 2,500 likes and 5,800 shares as of this article’s posting.
Netizens thought they were funny as hell.
Dessa Tariman said: “This is so witty.”
Clarence Avery Dy tagged a friend and said: “[T]ake your pick.”
Mark Ordonio thanked Arnaldo for his mind and greeted him a “Happy Thursday.”
Kim Hero said: “If the glove fits… Happy Valentines.”
