We just found out that the shipping line has already changed its name.
“Almost seven years after the sinking of MV Princess of the Stars, the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) canceled Sulpicio Lines Inc.’s authority to carry passengers across the sea,” reports Perfecto T. Raymundo of the Philippine News Agency on InterAksyon.com.
In the ruling in the administrative case against Sulpicio Lines — which has since changed its name to Span Asia Carrier — MARINA cancelled the Certificate of Public Convenience it granted to the firm on May 16, 2005, which was supposed to be effective for 25 years to carry passengers. Thus, the ships of Span Asia Carrier will be limited to “cargo operation” only.
The report noted: “It may be recalled that only 32 out of 851 passengers and crew members of M/V Princess of the Stars survived the sea mishap on June 21, 2008.”
In the same ruling, as the report indicated, “MARINA dismissed the complaint against the officials and crew members of M/V Princess of the Stars for lack of evidence.”
