Schools shouldn’t be afraid to get a little quirky and weird, especially when they’re teaching important concepts such as conservation and resourcefulness.
A high school in the province of Quezon did exactly that last week by instituting a “No Bag Day” in which faculty and students were allowed to carry their books and supplies to school using anything besides the usual backpacks. Students got creative, and a little cheeky, by repurposing a variety of everyday household objects into makeshift carriers.
The St. Joseph Academy of Sariaya, Quezon’s student council page posted an album of photos showing students and teachers using some wacky alternatives to the typical backpack.
While many brought in pails and laundry baskets to hold their textbooks, some brought stock pots, fishing nets, and even a microwave to lug their items around.
The school, which is a member of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, said No Bag Day was in observance of the season of creation, a month-long celebration of the environment that ends on October 4, known as the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of nature and animals.
The post has been shared over 11,000 times as netizens loved the students’ creative takes on the challenge.
“I wish we had this in our school,” one said.
“Kudos, this is hard to pull off!” another commented.
