Traveling for students has just become a little cheaper after the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) announced that they no longer have to pay terminal fees at the country’s airports, starting today.

According to the CAAP’s memo, which was posted on the Department of Transport’s (DOTr) Facebook account yesterday, all students studying in pre-schools, elementary schools, high schools, college, vocational, and art schools are exempted from paying terminal fees. However, those who are enrolled in law school, medical school, graduate school, and culinary schools are not covered by the exemption.

The terminal fee, also known as the “Philippine passenger service charge,” is a charge travelers have to pay whenever they depart from an airport in the country. Terminal fees for international flights can be as high as PHP750 (US$14.66) while those for domestic flights can cost as much as PHP300 (US$5.86).

The CAAP said that students who have mistakenly already paid their terminal fees can proceed to an airport’s Malasakit Help Desk to apply for a refund. All they need to do is to present a copy of their student identification card, boarding pass, and their airline ticket receipt.

The CAAP manages the country’s international and major domestic airports, including the Puerto Princesa International Airport in Palawan, the Bohol-Panglao International Airport, and Kalibo International Airport in Aklan.
