Street sweepers and traffic enforcers, who already work year-round under Manila’s tropical climate, will get a 30-minute break from the scorching heat as temperatures are expected to rise between March to May, the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said.
The MMDA confirmed that it was bringing back its “heat stroke break” policy in a bid to protect their field personnel from heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and cramps due to the torrid temperature.
Under the policy, on-duty traffic enforcers and street sweepers are allowed to leave their posts in shifts and take a 30-minute break to rest.
Street sweepers and traffic enforcers may also take an extra 15-minute break time on days when the heat index in Metro Manila reaches at least 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) and above.
The heat index refers to the temperature as felt by the body based on accompanying humidity.
The heat stroke break shall be implemented until May 31, MMDA said.
