RingTV.com reports that WBA junior featherweight beltholder Guillermo Rigondeaux, finally signed the contract to fight RING 122-pound champion and WBO junior featherweight titlist Nonito Donaire on unification match this April 13 on HBO.
It can be remembered that there were reports before about the two-time Cuban Olympic gold medalist insisting that he won’t sign the proposed fight over the anticipated bout with Donaire until the legal case between his promoters (Top Rank and Miami based promotion outfit Caribe) was settled. It even prompted Top Rank boss Bob Arum to put Vic Darchinyan into the mix of possible opponents for Donaire’s April ring return.
It looks like the Cuban boxer-puncher finally cleared his head and made a sound decision of signing the biggest payday – if not the biggest fight of his life as of yet.
According to RingTV.com, the attorney of Gary Hyde, manager of WBA junior featherweight beltholder, Pat English, said Rigondeaux (11-0, 8 knockouts) immediately signed within the hour when the offer sheet to face Donaire,(30-1, 21 KOs) was presented. Both of the fighters are promoted by Top Rank.
“[English] has called me to say that it has happened and that he had forwarded it to my office,” said Arum, who was at lunch and had not yet seen the documents. “I believe him, because he’s a responsible guy.”
He also added that he has high hopes that everything will be soon to put to motion as he expects that Donaire will also accept the bout and sign to finalize the agreement soon.
“Everything is in the process of happening,” Arum added. “When it happens, it will happen, and then, we’ll announce the signing and the site.”
Donaire is coming off a spectacular third-round knockout of accomplished Mexican former four-division titleholder Jorge Arce.
