Senator Gringo Honasan is among the individuals being considered as Vice President Jejomar Binay’s running mate in 2016, Senator Vicente Sotto III revealed on Sun, Sep 20.
Sotto also told radio dzMM that the Vice President’s camp has not yet reached a final decision on the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) tandem.
“Wala pa ‘eh [vice presidential candidate]. Pero kung ‘di ako nagkakamali, isa sa mga pinagpipilian nila [kampo ni Binay] ‘yung best friend ko eh. Si Gringo, si Senator Honasan,” Sotto said.
Honasan is a graduate of the Philippine Military Academy, where he received the highest leadership award of “Class Baron.” The veteran senator also served as then Defense Minister Juan Ponce Enrile’s chief of security under the Marcos regime.
Honasan played a key role in the Reform the Armed Forces Movement (RAM) movement, which withdrew support from the Marcos dictatorship and installed Corazon Aquino as president.
Binay was also among the key players in the February 1986 Revolution.
The UNA earlier said its search committee was considering six names as possible running mates of Binay when he seeks the presidency in 2016.
UNA interim president and Navotas Rep. Toby Tiangco confirmed that Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. is among their choices.
Binay is set to face independent candidate Senator Grace Poe and Liberal Party standard bearer Mar Roxas in the elections.
Poe will run with Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero as her vice-president, while Roxas is still wooing Camarines Sur Rep. Leni Robredo to be his running mate.
