A man allegedly hacked his 61-year-old mother to death on Monday night at Barangay (village) Capayuran in Pigcawayan, North Cotabato. He also allegedly took some of the woman’s body parts, cooked them, and attempted to eat them.
GMA News’ Balita Pilipinas Ngayon reported that the man, whose name was withheld, was chained inside their house because he was mentally disturbed.
According to Superintendent Bernard Tayong, the spokesperson of North Cotabato’s police, it was the suspect’s father who discovered the grisly crime.
Tayong was quoted by Bandera in Filipino: “The father left them at around 3pm and when he came back to the house he saw the different parts of the body scattered around. His son asked him if he knew the identity of the person. When he realized that it was his wife, he ran away and asked for his neighbors’ help.”
Tayong said when the police arrived, they saw the suspect cooking in the kitchen.
He said: “[T]hey saw the suspect standing in front of the gas range [oven] boiling a part of the mother’s arm inside a casserole….He hadn’t eaten it yet, he might have been waiting for it to be cooked.”
Tayong said the suspect was probably unchained by his mother because she felt bad for his condition. He takes medicines to control his violent tendencies but he failed to take them for two days after they ran out.
The spokesperson also said the police received reports that the suspect used to be hooked on illegal drugs, but they haven’t confirmed it yet with his father because he remained “disoriented” by what happened to his wife.
The suspect was brought to a police station but authorities want to bring him to a healthcare professional to confirm if he’s mentally disturbed.
“Doctors have to determine if he has psychological problems to decide where he should be detained. If he is, we can’t put him in a regular detention [center], we might bring him to a mental facility,” said Tayong.
