Pretty soon, Big Brother won’t just be a reality TV program. It will be reality itself.
Two sibling legislators want to make closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras mandatory in all government offices and commercial establishments.
In filing House Bill No. 2449, Cagayan de Oro Rep. Rufus Rodriguez and Abante Mindanao party-list Rep. Maximo Rodriguez seek to prevent crimes, citing how CCTVs become an “effective” crime deterrent.
Obviously, these brothers didn’t read our story last week about a restaurant’s CCTV being stolen.
The bill stipulates that business must install a CCTV system before a business license or permit is issued to them by the government. It also states that the system must be able to get a clear picture of faces recorded by the cameras.
Establishments must monitor their business 24/7, and keep the videos for a period of 60 days.
Business violating the bill, should it overcome the legislative mill, face a fine of P1,000 and the suspension of necessary licenses required for the establishment to operate.
