Solon wants CCTVs on every taxi stand

Some lawmakers seem to think that closed-circuit television cameras is the perfect crime deterrent. How about stiffer penalties so criminals would think twice about hurting other people?

“Amid recurring reports of taxi drivers who allegedly employ various schemes to rob passengers, a House member has filed a bill requiring business establishments with taxi stands to equip them with CCTV cameras and provide passengers with stubs containing information about the cabs they are taking,” reports Leila Salaverria in Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Quezon Rep. Angelina Tan wants to make CCTV systems in taxi stands of commercial establishments the norm so the riding public could be assured of their safety.

Her proposed bill, which she filed recently, mandates owners to maintain the good running condition of the CCTVs, requiring them to keep the recordings for 60 days. The bill also requires the establishment to assign a security personnel to hand out stubs containing pertinent information about the taxi and the driver to passengers.

She hopes to reduce the incidence of taxi drivers abusing passengers whether its overcharging or robbery.
