On Saturday, the Filipinas Heritage Library will host its latest Printed Word lecture and this time, it’ll be on…book covers. It’s called “Never Say ‘Never Judge a Book by its Cover’” and Prof. May Jurilla will be facilitating it.

Prof. Jurilla, who is the first Filipino book historian in the country, will tackling the brief history, the function and over all importance of book covers. She will also be curating the accompanying exhibit (which will run until March 21) where on display will be some of the books that she will be mentioning on Saturday.

The Filipinas Heritage Library gave Coconuts Manila a sneak peek of the lecture/exhibit that audiences can expect. Below are four of the lot:

Adventuras de Filipinas: Album Humoristico

Written by G. Tobler Hijo and published in St. Gallen, Switzerland in 1874, Adventuras is of note because of the Philippine rural imagery on the cover. Notice the word “humoristico” in the title? That’s because the book contains funny drawings of foreigners’ adventures in our islands. Mabuhay!

Arte y Reglas de la Lengue Tagala

From the Pedro Ortiz Armengol collection of the library, what makes this cover of Arte y Reglas important are the elaborate designs in the frame. How intricate, and to think there were no Adobe programs or apps then.

The Fateful Years: Japan’s Adventure in the Philippines, 1941-1945

Written by historian Teodoro A. Agoncillo, The Fateful Years make the cut because look: The cover design is by Malang. We know right?!

Floras de Filipinas

This full-colored illustrated study is by Augustinian priest and botanist Manuel Blanco. It makes the cut for three things: the intricate designs surrounding the title, the elaborate font, and the religious undertones in the cover.

3pm. Saturday, March 14. 2/F Ayala Museum, Makati Avenue cor Dela Rosa Street, Makati. PHP300
