San Miguel forward Arwind Santos admitted that he was trying to annoy Star Hotshots import Marqus Blakely with his antics during the fourth quarter of their PBA Governors Cup game Sunday night.
Early in the final period, Blakely was called for a loose ball foul after Santos had beaten him to a rebound.
Even after the whistle was blown, Blakely refused to back off, and Santos responded by making an exaggerated elbowing motion – three times.
The SMB forward was called for a technical foul – his second of the game – and summarily ejected. The Beermen were leading 78-70 at the time, and went on to win the game, 100-89.
“Andoon ‘yung mag-laro ka ng seryoso, pero ‘di masama na lagyan mo ng konting kakulitan, konting pang-asar,” Santos said, as quoted by ABS-CBN Sports, after the game as he explained his actions.
“Pang-asar ‘yung ginawa ko. Wala sa intention kong tatamaan talaga. Kontrolado ko ‘yung sarili ko,” he added.
Referees were able to separate the two players, but Star head coach Tim Cone stepped onto the playing court to confront Santos, and was clearly heard shouting: “That’s bullsh*t.”
Santos believes Cone’s “follow-up” led to his technical, which he did not expect to receive.
“Quiet na lang ako, kasi nandoon pa rin respeto ko kay Coach Tim. Pero para sa akin, ‘di ako masaya sa tawag na ‘yun,” Santos said. “Dapat warning muna, pwede pa.”
Santos scored 12 points and grabbed four rebounds before being ejected from the game.
