A Singaporean cargo ship ran aground off the coast of Candon, Ilocos Sur on Fri, Jul 17.

MV Alam Manis, which came from Dinagat Island, was on its way to deliver nickel ore to China. Its cargo got heavier after getting wet in the rain, causing the vessel to turn on its side.

Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Spokesperson Armand Balilo said 21 Filipino crew members were aboard the vessel.

Nineteen passengers were immediately saved by a responding team. One more was found later while Chief Officer Henry Liboon allegedly succumbed to heart attack.

A tugboat from Taiwan, Salvis Count, came and rescued the crew members.

Both the ship and tugboat were supposed to dock at Poro Point in San Fernando City, La Union, but heavy waves swept both vessels towards Ilocos Sur.

The PCG is still conducting further investigations into the incident —with a report from Diane Rivera, ABS-CBN News Ilocos and Robert Mano, dzMM
