Public storm warning signal number 2 has been hoisted over Batanes and Cagayan due to Typhoon “Ineng” (international name: Goni), state weather bureau PAGASA said.
PAGASA said Batanes group of islands, and Cagayan, including Calayan ang Babuyan group of islands, should experience 61-120 kph winds in 24 hours.
Under storm signal number 1 are Isabela, Kalinga, Apayao, Abra and Ilocos Norte. These areas should experience 30 to 60 kph of winds in 36 hours.
PAGASA said Ineng maintained its strength as it moved closer to extreme northern Luzon. The typhoon was still packing maximum sustained winds of 180 kph near the center and gusts of 215 kph.
As of 10 a.m., Ineng was spotted 800 kms east of Aparri, Cagayan.
Ineng was moving west at 23 kph. At this rate, it will be 340 kms east of Calayan, Cagayan on Thursday morning; 120 kms west northwest of Basco, Batanes on Friday morning; 130 kms north of Basco, Batanes on Saturday morning; and 375 kms north northwest of Basco, Batanes on Sunday morning.
PAGASA said Ineng will be outside the Philippine area of responsibility by Monday morning.
The typhoon was enhancing the southwest monsoon (habagat), affecting Palawan and Visayas.
Due to the enhanced southwest monsoon, the western section of Luzon, including Metro Manila, should expect occasional rains beginning Thursday until early next week, PAGASA said.
PAGASA said moderate to heavy rainfall is expected within the typhoon’s 700-km diameter.
Meanwhile, PAGASA forecaster Aldczar Aurelio said in a press conference that another typhoon, Atsani (international name), is unlikely to enter the PAR.
