Shoppersville Supermarket is one of the few remaining establishments that give Katipunan Avenue a small-town vibe reminiscent of the 1970s.
Unfortunately, the well-loved supermarket and bakeshop, which opened in 1968, was hit by fire early this morning, Jul 14.
The blaze continued to intensify and it reached fifth alarm by 7am.
According to an Inquirer report, the fire was declared under control at 9:51am, and no one was seriously hurt.
However, with decades of memories attached to the place, Quezon City residents felt the loss.
Best described as a neighborhood grocery, Shoppersville sells everything from grocery items to school supplies, from kitchen essentials to hard liquor.
It was best known for a small bakery selling pastries and cakes.
Being near Ateneo de Manila University, Miriam College and University of the Philippines, Shoppersville had a part in the school life of different generations.
Seeing the grocery gutted by fire brought feelings of nostalgia to shoppers who consider the place an institution in the community.
Many are worried about the owners and the staff who will feel the financial impact of the loss.
As of writing, the cause of fire has not yet been determined.
It is unclear if there will be plans to construct a new Shoppersville building (though the owners have vowed to reopen soon, for the sake of its long-term employees), but clearly Katipunan will never be the same again.
