The September 2013 Cover Wars: Preview VS Metro VS Mega

Every fashion-crazed individual knows that September is THE month when it comes to glossies. Well, fashion mags, to be specific. This is when issues are the thickest, the fashion editorials the most fabulous, and the cover stars the hottest or most in demand or even the most unexpected.

It definitely applies to the local magazine industry. Just look at the covers of the top three Pinoy fashion mags this month. The fact that they all went for multiple covers is proof of how much they want to wow readers. While ABS-CBN’s Metro and One Mega Group’s Mega both have two covers (the former featuring Ruffa Gutierrez, the latter Anne Curtis), Summit Publishing’s Preview (featuring Georgina Wilson) beats them with a total of three covers – plus one that is exclusive for online.

Another way to make the September issue special is to shoot the cover story abroad, something that both Mega and Metro did – but not Preview. Mega did a more impressive job shooting in two different locations – Machu Picchu in Peru and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil – while Metro shot their two covers in just Florence, Italy. However, it looks like Metro made the most of their location shoot, basing on their half-body and full-body covers. Some people may not get “Brazil” or “Peru” when they see the Mega covers, especially the one with the close-up shot. Some people may even ask, “Why shoot there when you’re not going to show the whole place?”

But there is no doubt how beautiful that particular Mega cover is. Anne looks arresting, and the white-top-mixed-with-colorful-accessories thing totally works. That cover > the other cover, definitely.

When it comes to makeup, Preview’s efforts deserve major applause, and it’s not just because each cover showcases a different theme. It’s because every look, all created by Fanny Serrano, is stunning, from the strong one in The Androgynous to the less-is-more in The Romantic.

Actually, Preview wins “Best Hair,” as well. Raymond Santiago does an exceptional job especially with The Romantic cover, where Georgina has her locks in stylish disarray. Okay, that Katy Perry hair is pretty gorgeous, too, we have to admit.  Actually, it’s an easy win for Preview because Anne and Ruffa’s hair (care of Raymond Santiago and Ricci Chan, respectively) aren’t that made up for their respective covers.

As for the clothes and styling, it’s pretty obvious how the pieces from Peter Pilotto, Randall Solomon, Gucci, and Alexander Wang picked by the Preview stylists (Liz Uy, Vince Uy, and Daryl Chang) all look amazing. Actually, the Salvatore Ferragamo numbers Ruffa wore for Metro are pretty gorgeous, too. However, among all the covers, it’s the Mega one with the tight shot of Anne that has got to be the most arresting. She doesn’t look drastically different but interestingly, this is Anne like we’ve never seen her before.

If there’s only one thing we’re concerned about, it’s how these are the same girls we see on these covers all the time. If only Mega did a Melai Cantiveros again.
