Sen. Nancy Binay blames DOH for metro measles outbreak

Somebody’s seeing red over the Metro Manila measles outbreak.

“Senator Nancy Binay will file a resolution this week seeking a full review of the government’s immunization programs after the Department of Health (DOH) recently declared a measles outbreak in some Metro Manila areas,” reports Philstar.com.

Apparently, Binay believes that “the DOH may have failed to meet its target in providing the needed immunization for children and adults.” She accused the DOH of abandoning the Ligtas Tigdas program, which involves mass vaccination of children aged nine months to 15 years old to achieve its zero-measles target. The said program was launched in 1998 and its aim was to stamp out measles in a span of 10 years.

In a statement, Binay asked, “What happened to the vaccines the government bought in the last 15 years? Nagamit ba ang mga ito? Nag-expire na lang ba? Ilang mga bata ang napabakunahan? Bakit walang follow-up? Sino bang mga ahensya ang katulong ng DOH dito? (Were they used? Did they just expire? How many kids were vaccinated? How come there’s no follow-up? Who are the other agencies helping the DOH with this?).”
