Senator Bongbong Marcos says no to placing cops under LGUs

After the Philippine National Police (PNP) reported the involvement of police officers in the abduction of two men on EDSA in broad daylight, the suggestion was made to place the police under their respective government units (LGUs) instead of being centralized under the PNP.

“Senator Bongbong Marcos, chairman of the Senate Committee on Local Government, thumbed down suggestions because he said transferring the police force to the jurisdiction of mayors might create a tendency towards the formation of ‘secret armies,'” reports Mario Casayuran in Manila Bulletin.

The report noted: “Under current laws, the PNP is placed under the direct supervision of the PNP director-general who in turn is under the administrative coverage of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG). The PNP headquarters is at Camp Crame in Quezon City.”

Marcos went on to suggest increasing the salaries of police officers in order to prevent them from engaging in illegal activities in order to get more money.
