If you’ve seen a photo of a P500 bill with the image of former President and dictator Ferdinand Marcos on it, then it’s fake, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas said.
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas warned Filipinos regarding the circulation of the fake P500 banknote, saying that no such bill was ever issued.
BSP issued the warning after satirical page Cebu Dairy posted the photo, which was shared over 30,000 times.
The institution wrote, “Ipinapaalam ng Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) sa publiko na hindi ito naglabas ng mga bagong disenyo ng salaping papel.” (BSP would like to inform the public that it did not release any new banknote design.)
“Ang BSP advisory na ito ay tugon sa isang 500-piso commemorative banknote na unang nalathala sa isang satirical news website na ibinabahagi sa social media. Pinapaalalahanan ng BSP ang publiko na maging mapanuri at hinihikayat nito ang sinumang nakakaalam ng paggamit ng pekeng salaping papel na ipagbigay-alam ito sa pulisya o sa Payments and Currency Investigation Group ng BSP.”
(This BSP advisory is in reference to a supposed 500-peso commemorative banknote that was featured on a satirical news website shared on social media. The BSP reminds the public to be critical, and encourages anyone with knowledge of fake banknotes being used to get in touch with the police or the BSP’s Payments and Currency Investigation Group.)
The BSP also reminded the public that violators caught creating counterfeit banknotes will be penalized under RA 10951 and can face up to 12 years of jail time and a P2 million fine.
