An MRT-3 security guard shot a vagrant in the foot after the latter refused to leave the train tracks in between the Ayala and Magallanes stations this morning.

According to a report from The Philippine Daily Inquirer, a “taong grasa” was found loitering at the train tracks at around 8:43 am, prompting the MRT-3 management to send three security guards and a cop to remove him from the area.

Taong grasa (literally “grease person”) are vagrants often seen in the streets of Manila. They are usually homeless people with mental health problems.

According to a Twitter report from DZMM, the man climbed the MRT’s fence to reach the train tracks.

The post read: “A taong grasa was wounded after he was shot by a guard at the MRT. [H]e climbed the fence and loitered around the tracks. The vagrant was seen hurling rocks at the guards which is why he was shot.”

Based on the MRT-3’s report, the vagrant threw rocks at passing vehicles as well as the security team. This reportedly forced one of the guards named Federico Bustamante to shoot the vagrant’s ankle.

The report from the MRT goes: “The unidentified person was allegedly throwing rocks at them and even to the cars at the road. In the process, the guard shot the leg of the ‘taong grasa’ to prevent the latter from inflicting harm to others.”

The man was brought to the Makati Hospital for treatment, where he is reportedly in a stable condition.

For his part, Bustamante surrendered his weapons to the authorities. He’s currently being investigated.
