Scavenger in PH town finds PHP165,000 in trash bag, money returned to rightful owner

There are still good people in this world.

On Mon, Aug 8, a woman who makes her living as a scavenger in the town of Tayug in the province of Pangasinan — which is 170 kilometers north of Metro Manila — found PHP165,000 (around US$3,524) in cash in a trash bag.

But rather than keeping the money, the woman turned it over to the municipal police.

The woman, Maria Lozano, had been collecting recyclable materials when she found the trash bag in front of the Sacred Heart Savings Cooperative office. When she looked inside the trash bag, there was a pouch, which contained the money.

Upon investigation, police traced the owner of the cash.

“As it turns out, the money belonged to the Sacred Heart Savings Cooperative. The office cashier, Michelle Gasmen, explained that she had left the pouch containing cash [with] the cooperative’s manager as she had to leave the office early last Fri, Aug 5,” reports Eva Visperas in The Philippine Star.

However, the manager probably didn’t realize that the pouch had fallen into the trash bag.

Come Mon morning, Aug 8, the first employee who arrived at the cooperative’s office threw out the trash.
