Sandro Marcos asks what is ‘hugot,’ anti-Marcos netizens reply

This isn’t the first time that Sandro Marcos caused an online frenzy with a single Tweet.

The grandson of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos innocently asked what is “hugot” on the popular microblogging site Twitter, and he got burning replies from those who are not happy with his family’s controversial history.

“Hugot” literally means to pull out. In millennial lingo, it is used to describe deeply emotional statements drawn from within. #Hugot is often used when talking about feelings, heartbreaks and love.

Oh but if you’re Sandro Marcos, practically any word can be used with a political shade.

Twitter users took Sandro’s hugot question as an opportunity to start a conversation about abuses during martial law, and his grandfather’s hushed burial at the Libingan ng Mga Bayani (Heroes’ Cemetery).

“Hugot? That’s what your family did to the national treasury during your lolo’s time that’s why our country is still in debt,” said Twitter user Jeff Angeles.

“Um, when you unbury/dig something.Example: Let us hugot your lolo from LNMB. G ka?” said Twitter user Awoke2Remember

Anti-Marcos Netizens have similar explanations.

Even Teddy Boy Locsin replied.

Meanwhile, there were also Twitter users who defended Sandro. Others patently explained what hugot really means

Sandro had earlier Tweeted that “Rogue One is incredible.” In reply, anti-Marcos netizens pointed out parallelism between martial law and the movie about overthrowing an evil empire.
