Sandiganbayan issues hold departure order vs. Vice President Jejomar Binay’s wife

What’s up with this case?

“A hold departure order (HDO) has been issued by the Sandiganbayan against former Makati mayor, Dr. Elenita Binay, the wife of Vice-President Jejomar Binay,” reports ABS-CBNnews.com. Dr. Binay served as Makati mayor from 1998 to 2001.

The vice president’s spokesman, Joey Salgado, said the Sandiganbayan issued the order after the Office of the Ombudsman filed cases against Dr. Binay involving “the alleged anomalous purchase of P36-million worth of hospital equipment and supplies in 2001.”

Salgado said that these were “refiled cases that have been previously dismissed” so “Dr. Binay’s lawyers were surprised by the sudden issuance of a hold departure order.”

On Friday, May 30, Dr. Binay, accompanied by her husband and their children Senator Nancy Binay and Mayor Junjun Binay, posted a PHP70,000 bail at the Sandiganbayan’s 3rd Division.

Her lawyers, Atty. Sandra Coronel and Atty. Juan Carlos Mendoza, said this was done to “preempt any sudden issuance of an arrest warrant against Dr. Binay.”
