They will surely savor this win like a glass of cold beer.

“The San Miguel Beermen won their first Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup title in 14 seasons after they beat the Alaska Aces, 80-78, on Wednesday night, January 21,” reports ABS-CBNnews.com.

The report noted: “Just like in their previous games, the Beermen built an early lead of 23 points, only to lose it to the Aces in the payoff period.”

Fortunately, as the report indicated, “Arwind Santos’ triple started San Miguel’s final push in the end game.”

Santos finished the game with 22 points and 11 rebounds to go with his four blocks. He was named as the Finals Most Valuable Player.

Meanwhile, the Best Player of the Conference was San Miguel’s June Mar Fajardo who came up with 21 points and 25 boards in the game.

The report added that “the title win also allowed coach Leo Austria to net a PBA title in his coaching debut with the Beermen.” Austria likewise “joined the elite roster of PBA personalities who were able to win league titles as players and later on as coaches.”

In any case, a report on Philboxing.com by Maloney L. Samaco recalled that “the last time San Miguel won an importless tournament crown was during the 2001 All-Filipino Cup during the time of coach Jong Uichico when the MVP was Danny Ildefonso.”
