Russian man arrested for switching banana price tags at QC grocery

How far would you go to save money on bananas? Well, one man went too far.

“Istuan Tapai—a 50-year-old Russian national who’s currently a resident of Banahaw Street in the Cubao area—was arrested on Saturday night as he was leaving the Shopwise supermarket at the Araneta Commercial Center with a bunch of bananas,” reports Jeannette I. Andrade in Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Police cited the testimony of Shopwise employee Reynaldo Masbad, who saw Tapai removing the price tag from a bunch of saba bananas worth PHP48.13 and putting it on a bunch of Cavendish bananas worth PHP74.97. In short, he wanted to save PHP26.84.

Tapai was nabbed by Shopwise employees as he was leaving the supermarket. He was later turned over to the custody of the Quezon City Police District’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (QCPD-CIDU).
