Rudolf Kratochwill is an art curator and co-owner of 1335Mabini, a gallery located in a beautiful 1914 apartment building in Ermita.
“I came to Manila in 1984 from Austria for the first time and lived here permanently for 15 years. Actually what attracted me here is the art scene and it is quite unique in the world. Because of its history, religion and other factors, it has created a contemporary art scene which is quite fantastic.
“Another form of art I am very much interested in, which I also collect, is Philippine tribal art or the art of the indigenous tribe from the Cordillera and also from Mindanao. I have been in the art world for 30 years now and I know artists from all over the world. It is either through art fairs or personal contacts that I get to meet the artists that have participated in 1335Mabini.
“We have also received inquiries from many serious artists to come and work here. Usually I would try and see if we can collaborate and do a show together. Sometimes if we have another show or exhibit we are putting together, we might include their works in a group show, if it fits the theme.”
Souls of Manila is a new Coconuts series of street portrait photography inspired by Brandon Stanton’s Humans of New York. Every human has a story to tell, and we intend to share some from the millions of souls who call Metro Manila home.
