We’re normally happy and proud when anything about the Philippines gets international media coverage, we’re just not sure to react to this one. Uhm, #PinoyPride?
The Philippine presidential election was one of the topics on the Sun, May 8, episode of HBO late-night talk show Last Week with John Oliver. And the hard-hitting Oliver set his target on presidential bet Rodrigo Duterte.
Oliver began the segment by relating Donald Trump as “the presumptive Republican nominee” to the elections in the Philippines.
“If you’re feeling depressed about the current state of this elections, let me give you some perspective from the Philippines,” he said, noting that the presidential front-runner Duterte is a “colorful character, to say the least.”

Citing reports from local and international media, Oliver noted previous Duterte controversies such as his rape joke, swearing at Pope Francis, and his alleged links to the Davao Death Squad.
“Not knowing how many people you have killed is like not knowing how many Vicodin you took,” Oliver joked in response to a clip of Rappler’s Maria Ressa’s interview with Duterte admitting he has killed “about three people.” “If you don’t know the exact answer, the answer is way too f*cking many,” said Oliver.
Oliver also decribed Duterte’s infamous Apr 16 campaign speech (the one with the rape joke) as nauseating. “What a f*cking asshole,” he said.
Oliver also said, “Okay, let this be a lesson to all. When we say ‘I want a politician to tell me what he really thinks,’ we should specify that that politician should not be a total f*cking monster”
The May 8 episode of the talk show is not yet up on the official Last Week Tonight with John Oliver YouTube account, but netizens already took the liberty of uploading the Duterte segment of the show online.
And if for some reason you think this is an online hoax, foreign media has started to pick up the story. Check this one from the Daily Beast. Its headline reads: “If You Think Trump Is Bad, Wait Till You Meet Rodrigo Duterte.” Yup, everyone’s getting the Duterte and Trump similarities now.
