Well, we’re really not surprised.
Soial media giant Facebook released a list of the “most talked about global topics” of 2016, and President Rodrigo Duterte and the Philippine Presidential election made it to the fifth spot — right up there with the US Presidential election, Pokemon Go and Brazilian Politics.
President Duterte has a massive online presence. His social media strategy helped propel his win in the Philippine Presidential election in May.
Facebook came up with the list based on “how frequently a topic was mentioned in Facebook posts made between Jan 1 and Nov 27, 2016.”
The highlights of the year include a pretty interesting mix of sports events, dead legends, regime changes, a game trend and one advocacy.
Here is the full list from Facebook:
1 US Presidential Election
2 Brazilian Politics
3 Pokémon Go
4 Black Lives Matter
5 Rodrigo Duterte & Philippine Presidential Election
6 Olympics
7 Brexit
8 Super Bowl
9 David Bowie
10 Muhammad Ali
Facebook also shared its list of top live videos for the year. On the No. 1 spot is “Chewbacca Mom” Candice Payne, who became an Internet celebrity after filming herself trying on the mask of the Star Wars character on a whim.
“Even though it may seem like we’re divided, we’re still connected,” says Facebook year-in-review video.
ABS-CBN News noted that Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg described 2016 as a “difficult year for a lot of people around the world.”
“But what gives me hope is that even our darkest moments were a little brighter because of the connections we shared with each other,” Zuckerberg said.
