They haven’t picked anyone yet, but he’s worth considering.
“Pinoy basketball icon Robert Jaworski expressed openness to take over the helm of Gilas Pilipinas as executives of the country’s basketball federation begin the search for a new national coach,” reports GMA News Online.
In an interview on GMA News TV’s Balitanghali, Jaworski said, “It’s gonna be a tough job. But I think taking a serious look at it is not a bad idea, because it’s a calling.”
It’s well-known that “Jaworski led the Philippines to a silver medal finish in the 1990 Asian Games.” However, he has been out of coaching since running for the Senate in 1998.
The report explained: “The Gilas post is vacant after the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) organized a committee to search for a new coach and new members of the team. Chot Reyes, who has been at the helm of the Gilas program since 2012, has withdrawn his name from consideration for the post.”
The report went on to say that “the SBP committee will convene this month to come up with a shortlist of candidates for the coaching spot in time for the federation’s December meeting.”
