Boxing coach Freddie Roach believes Floyd Mayweather Jr. is itching to fight again and could be convinced to square off against Manny Pacquiao for a second time.
Mayweather visited Roach’s Wild Card Boxing gym wice and this fueled the trainer’s suspicion that the retired boxer is looking for that second fight.
“First, I’d like to know why he visited me twice two months ago. He came by my gym. The first time I was here, the second time I was in Russia. He wanted to watch the sparring and watch my guys work out,” Roach said in Boxing Scene.
The coach said Mayweather may have been checking if Pacquiao was hanging around the gym, training.
“I asked him if he was looking for Manny Pacquiao. He kind of smiled and ignored everything. I don’t really know why he came here, but why else would he come here? I think he’s looking for Manny Pacquiao. I think that fight can be made,” said Roach.
Pacquiao is currently in his final week of training for his “comeback” fight against Jessie Vargas, the reigning WBO welterweight champion.
The fight is scheduled to take place in Las Vegas next week.
“[Mayweather will] be back [in the ring] for sure. I think that he’s back for sure. He’s not done either. He’s still a good boxer, he’s still fresh, he’s not the most exciting guy in the world to watch but he’s still a good boxer, he is,” said Roach.
The boxing trainer also had an accidental meeting with Les Moonves, the chief executive of CBS which owns Showtime. Roach has reportedly told the television executive that Pacquiao still wants to fight Mayweather.
The coach has quoted Moonves as saying that he could “deliver” Mayweather to give way to another lucrative bout.
