A riot broke out between two rival gangs inside Muntinlupa City’s New Bilibid Prison early this morning.

Bureau of Corrections Spokesman Gabriel Chaclag said the clash between Sputnik and Commando gangs started at about 2:30am but said that prison guards were able to control it before it could further escalate. The riot occurred at the East Quadrant section of Bilibid.

“Two groups clashed the Sputnik and Commando. There were casualties and injured [inmates]. But we still don’t have an official report so we can’t say how many are dead and injured,” Chaclag said in English and Filipino in an interview with ABS-CBN’s Teleradyo.

“There were [inmates] who died. We’re just not sure how many of them are and their names,” he added.

He said in a separate interview with radio station DZBB that officials are still investigating why the two factions clashed.

“It must be serious because they waited for dawn before they started their fight,” he said.
