RIP: PH basketball’s Carlos ‘The Great Difference’ Loyzaga

Another bites the dust.

Philippine basketball great Carlos “Caloy” Loyzaga passed away early on Wedesnday morning, Jan 27. He was 85.

According to Musong Castillo of the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Loyzaga passed away at the Cardinal Santos Memorial Hospital in San Juan, City.

Loyzaga was given the moniker “The Great Difference” because he did spell the great difference on the court for the Philippine team, including the Olympics in the ’50s.

His biggest moment came during the World Basketball Championships in 1954, when the Philippines won against France 66-60. Loyzaga topscored with 19 points and was later inducted to the All World’s Mythical Selection.

According to the PDI report, it was the first and only time an Asian nation finished with a medal in the competition.

We’re probably more familiar of his sons and dathers: Chito and Joey, who were both active in the PBA during the ’80s and Teresa and Bing who are both actresses.

Rest in peace.
