RIP: Mel Mathay, former QC mayor

It’s unfortunate that he passed away on Christmas Day. “Ismael ‘Mel’ Mathay Jr., 81, who served as vice governor of the Metro Manila Commission and later mayor of Quezon City, died on Wednesday, Dec 25 of cardiac arrest,” reports the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Mathay, who was taken to Medical City, was pronounced dead between 8am and 9am that day. His remains now lie in state at the Christ the King Parish in Greenmeadows, Quezon City.

“This morning, ang sabi when he went down from the room to watch his usual basketball game in the morning, he just stood up and said he was kind of feeling cold, and he walked to the comfort room. When he was about to enter the comfort room, ubo lang siya nang isang beses, then wala na, nag-pass out na,” his son Chuck tells ABS-CBN.

The wake for Mathay will be held at the Christ the King Parish in Greenmeadows Avenue, Quezon City

Mathay was QC mayor from 1992 to 2001.
