Heads up, train commuters: the month-long free rides at the Metro Rail Transit-3 (MRT-3) begin today.
As announced by President Rodrigo Duterte last week, passengers may ride the MRT-3 trains for free until April 30, except for its scheduled maintenance shutdown between April 12 to 17.
MRT-3 management said that the trains can accommodate 400,000 passengers during the free ride season, over double its current average number of riders.
MRT-3 General Manager Michael Capati said that between 248,000 to 260,000 passengers ride the MRT-3 a day, with an average fare collection of PHP2.7 million.
Capati also said that the MRT-3 administration is slowly working to increase its setup to four-car trains instead of the current three-car trains.
The train management will test the four-car train setup during this period, when it will be deployed during rush hours.
