Ride-sharing problems? LTFRB suspends new applications for Uber and Grab

Bad news for persons planning to apply as drivers in ride-sharing apps.

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) suspended accepting and processing applications for transport network vehicle service (TNVS) like Uber and Grab in Metro Manila.

In memorandum circular No. 2016-008 issued on Jul 21, the LTFRB directed its technical division and all regional offices not to accept new TNVS applications proposing to operate in the National Capital Region, Inquirer reports.

Why? Existing policies need to be reviewed.

Rappler says the circular was issued due to the rising volume of TNVS applications and the department’s need to review the current fare scheme.

LTFRB clarified that the suspension applies only to new applications.

This isn’t the first time that ride-sharing apps encountered a problem like this.

In December 2015, a Quezon City Regional Trial Court ordered the government to stop accepting Uber and GrabCar applications for 20 days.
