Who knew that they “harvested rice” at Rizal Park every year?
“On Friday, Nov 22, elementary and high school students will harvest rice in a ceremony in Rizal Park to mark 2013 as the National Year of Rice and November as Rice Awareness Month, according to the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice),” reports Rudy Fernandez in The Philippine Star.
Just like in previous years, the ceremonial harvest will be held at the park’s 300-square meter terraced Rice Garden. The garden is open to the public.
PhilRice director Eufemio Rasco Jr. describes the rice garden as “a simulated field showing actual rice plants of traditional and modern varieties at different growth stages, for the different rice-growing environments and for various consumers’ needs and preferences.”
The garden, which was set up in 2001, is tended by the Department of Agriculture-PhilRice Los Baños station.
