Retrieval operations for four missing landfill workers

Rescue workers fear four missing landfill workers are already dead after an avalanche at a landfill in Rodriguez, Rizal.

Missing since Friday afternoon are maintenance personnel Pablito Esto,  Rovidico Olod and Eddie Malano, and backhoe operator Gary Balahibo.

They were working near the mountain of trash when it collapsed. Rescuers on site at the Rodriguez, Rizal landfill said that they were having problems ranging from the unstable ground of the landfill, as well as communications problems due to poor cell phone signals in the area.

The trash avalanche covered about a hectare of the 19-hectare landfill. The four personnel were tasked to clear a canal to allow water to flow to a treatment facility.

The two-hour rain prior to the tragedy may have triggered the collapse, Inquirer News reported.
