Rain and floods turn Manila into a parking lot again

Rain and flooded streets again brought traffic in Manila to a standstill Monday night, with motorists complaining on social media about how the entire megacity had been turned into a parking lot.

Actress Ruffa Gutierrez remarked on her Twitter account that it took “three hrs & 30 min from Rockwell (in Makati) to White Plains (in Quezon City)!”

Businessman Jon Bantigue said on his Facebook account that ” (it took us) 4.5 hours from Baguio to Katipunan. (It took) 1.5 hours Katipunan to Eastwood.” Baguio is in Benguet province in Northern Luzon.

Paulo del Puerto, senior product manager at Multiply.com, meanwhile, posted that it took him three hours to get from Ortigas Avenue in Pasig to Eastwood City in Libis, Quezon City.

According to a related report from ABS-CBN News,  Metro Manila Development Authority chairman Francis Tolentino said the flooding was caused by clogged drains. He added flooding had subsided and traffic had eased by around 10 p.m.

Heavy rain from the southwest monsoon and tropical depression Emong is expected until the weekend.

The heavy traffic Monday night was preceded by a similar traffic jam, also caused by heavy rain, last Thursday.
