Quezon City may buy private school buildings to meet classroom shortage

The Quezon City government may buy up financially distressed schools to help address a classroom shortage that has forced at least 10 schools in the city to put up makeshift classrooms.

Mayor Herbert Bautista said getting into public-private partnerships with the owners of private schools could give the city more classroom space. That could mean “saving money and addressing the problem of classroom congestion at the same time,” he said in a Philippine Star report.

Despite new school buildings completed and 11 more under construction, the shortage of classrooms in the city’s Second District has meant some classes are held in tents while some classes have to share classrooms.

The city expects around 400,000 public school students to attend this school year, which, for many, starts Monday, June 3.
